The Ethiopian Association of Journalists with Disabilities is a professional association of journalists who primarily focus on the issue of disability in various media.

WHO WE ARE

About Us

The association was registered with the Federal Civil Society Organizations Authority on January 06, 2014, under Proclamation No. 1113/2011 and obtained legal licence to operate in the country. On September 11, 2015, an extensive program on the establishment of the association and the official launch of operations was successfully organized in Adama City. .

OUR WORK

What We Do

At the Ethiopian Journalist Persons with Disabilities Association (EJPDA), we are committed to using the power of media to create an inclusive society where people with disabilities are heard, represented, and empowered.

Media & Awareness

  • Carry out continuous work in various media outlets in our country with in-depth awareness of the social, economic, political issues of persons with disabilities.
  • Highlight the role of persons with disabilities in the media sector in the country's development participation.
  • Develop and disseminate message and programs on disability and related issues to the public through electronics, print, the Internet.

Training & Capacity Building

  • Providing training to journalists, senior management of the media, owners, on media and disability.
  • Enabling school mini media to have adequate awareness on disability and related issues.
  • Empowerment activities to recruit qualified professionals with disabilities to work in various media outlets.

Advocacy & Recognition

  • Liaison with various countries and partner organizations to develop the extensive experience of the professionals embraced by the association and provide them with the exchange of experience.
  • Recognizing institutions and individuals who are making significant contributions by working around people with disabilities.

Accessibility & Innovation

  • Establish a community radio for people with disabilities that addresses the problem of people with disabilities.
  • Ensure that diverse information is accessible in a convenient format for persons with disability.
  • Bringing people with disabilities to our country who work in mass media around the world and encourage them to share their experiences.

Impacts

As it is known the number of Disabilities in Ethiopia is increasing time to time due to many reasons where currently, is estimated around 20 million people out of the total population. The Association aspires to bring impact on full as well as equal participation of persons with disabilities in the social, educational, economical and public development aspects of life alongside the media.
